Pokemon Catch Rate

I can't actually believe that they had this.

It's the exact formula to determine the catch rate for a pokemon.

Try it sometime :)


The exact formula is as follows:

Where

  • HPmax is the number of hit points the Pokémon has at full health,
  • HPcurrent is the number of hit points the Pokémon has at the moment,
  • rate is the catch rate of the Pokémon,
  • bonusball is the multiplier for the Poké Ball used, and
  • bonusstatus is the multiplier for any status ailment the Pokémon has (2 for sleep and freeze, 1.5 for paralyze, poison and burn).

Given this formula, the maximum value for a (if the Pokémon could have 0 HP) would be catch rate × bonusball × bonusstatus. The minimum value for a (for a Pokémon with full health) would be × catch rate.

If a is greater than or equal to 255, then the Pokémon is caught. If not, then calculate b as follows:

Then generate 4 random numbers between 0 and 65535, inclusive. If the random numbers are less than or equal to b, then the Pokémon is caught; otherwise the ball shakes n times, where n is the number of random numbers that are less than b. Note that b ≥ 65535 if a ≥ 255.

Therefore, the probability p of catching a Pokémon, given the values a and b calculated above, is:

The second expression for p may be expanded as follows:

Since (216 - 1)4 ≈ 264, we can approximate p with the following expression:

The percentage error in this approximation approaches 0 as a approaches 255, and does not exceed 0.02%.

For a constant probability p, the probability P that a player can capture the Pokémon with no more than r tries is:

Note that this is the cumulative probability function for a geometric distribution. The expected value of r is 1/p, that is to say, on average, a Pokémon that can be caught with probability p will be caught with 1/p tries.

The inverse problem, the number of tries, r, needed to have a probability P of capturing a Pokémon is:

The Great Pokemon Race Finale

I'm sorry to announce that the Epic Pokemon Race was a fail, and has been postponed.
Mostly because we're all retards and don't know how to use the emulators properly, therefore the games were lost. Well, I say all of us but Lachy didn't screw up so he's announced himself the eternal pokemon champion.
I demand a rematch.

Henceforth, emulators can suck my wang.
Hypothetically, if I had one. You know.

The Great Pokemon Race - ep 1

Well it all started off with emulators. Then Lachy and I decided we'd race to see who could finish the original Pokemon Red version the fastest on said emulators. Because we were bored.
Chadd decided to join in but God only knows where he's at.
Lachy chose Squirtle as his first pokemon because he got to choose first. So then I chose Bulbasaur because I finished it once with Charmander already and I need a change of scenery/pokemon. And so that leaves Chadd with the lovely Charmander - ah, a match made in heaven.

so there are rules, of course.

Rule Book section 1 - communication
1.1 all players must agree to disagree at all times on all types of pokemon
1.2 all players will meet once each weekday to react exciting battles from the previous night (unless there are circumstances where a) the conversation does not allow for this to happen or b) the boys are trying to chat someone up... however unlikely, it must be written here)
1.3 all players have to update each other on progress

section 2 - cheating
2.1 no forms of cheating either on gameboys, gameboy colours or on emulators. Emulation cheating includes speeding the game up.
2.2 no red candy as this is just for little bitches.
2.3 no deleting of files of other players
2.4 no misleading information that will put other players at a disadvantage.

section 3 - winner
2.1 the winner shall be the first to complete the game, winning all badges and/or collecting all pokemon
2.2 the winner shall be given a prize yet to be announced, but it'll be hot diggity whatever it is.
2.3 the winner shall have eternal ... pokemon ... glory. :D

We started yesterday and the leaderboard is as follows:

1. Lachy: Third Gym
2. Darcie: First Gym
3. Chadd: Got up to first gym and then lost game file. Next time, Chadd.

So wait until next time to find out who is the ultimate pokemon trainer...
actually training in preperation for the new games. :D cannot wait...
