Book Review - Old Kingdom Chronicles

The Old Kingdom Chronicles, by Garth Nix.

Only the Abhorsen can keep the living safe from the dead.

I don't know where Garth Nix gets his ideas from but I'd sure like to know. The Old Kingdom Chronicles is a trilogy written by this Australian author (He also wrote the Keys to the Kingdom series, but that was for younger readers. The Old Kingdom Chronicles gives me nightmares...)
Set in a world where there are two lands and ways of life - that is, the new kingdom, full of technology and machinery, and the Old Kingdom, full of magic. The first book is based on the story of Sabriel, the daughter of the Abhorsen - the person whose duty it is to keep the dead beyond the final gate. The Old Kingdom is a place of free magic, where dead beings wander with the living, and Sabriel is sent away to the land where magic is controlled and very nearly extinct.
But when the Abhorsen is lost in the gates of death, someone has to stop the walking dead from not being, ahem, dead. So Sabriel has to take her fathers place as a 'gatekeeper' of sorts, and she controls the zombie-things using a number of bells which can control certain monsters, and she's got a really cool sword and she draws things in the dirt and stuff. I'm kind of going off topic, but honestly you have to read this book. It's amazing.
The books are titled Sabriel, Lirael and Abhorsen, and it's pretty dandy because you can buy them all in one and save moneys. :) For any other bookworms who are interested, that is. It's an epic zombie story. Definitely recommended, one of my all time favourites.
Henceforth, gonna go read some more. Hang in there.
